Where do the used needles go?

Pen needles do not go in the household bin. Once a needle is used it goes back into its bay in NeedleBay and locks there, so nothing is loose in a drawer, a handbag or the rubbish.

Lids open over the sharps bin, press the release, and the used needles drop out.

Up to four used needles stay inside until you reach a sharps bin, the yellow box for used needles. Then open the lids over the bin, press the release, and they drop out without being touched.

NeedleBay is not a sharps bin and does not replace one. Your pharmacy, GP surgery or council can tell you how to get a sharps bin and where a full one goes.

Which GLP-1 and weight-loss pens work with NeedleBay?

Most GLP-1 and weight-loss pens take a screw-on pen needle, the same kind insulin pens use, and that needle is what NeedleBay holds. These pens all do:

Only Ozempic and Wegovy FlexTouch come with needles in the box, four each. The rest are supplied by your pharmacy or prescriber. You may also see GLP-1 written as GLP1; it is the same thing.

Pens with the needle built in

Trulicity and the Wegovy 7.2 mg single-dose pen have the needle built in. You do not attach anything, and the whole pen goes in the sharps bin after one use. If your pen is one of those, you do not need pen needles and you do not need NeedleBay.

Taken from each pen’s own leaflet, October 2026. Pens change, so check your own leaflet. Not sure which yours is? Look at the pen: if you screw a needle on before each injection, NeedleBay is for you.

New to injecting? Here is what NeedleBay does

If a weekly pen is your first injection, the needles are the fiddly bit: tiny, sealed, and easy to drop. NeedleBay takes that away. Starting from scratch? The kit you need is the short list.

NeedleBay held in the palm while a pen is screwed onto the needle in its bay, ready to inject
  1. Used needles locked away. Up to four stay inside until you get to a sharps bin. Nothing loose in a drawer or a handbag.
  2. Four needles ready to use. Load them with the seals on. Each waits in its own bay.
  3. No touching the needle. Screw your pen onto the needle while it sits in its bay, inject, then screw the pen back into the same bay and unscrew. The used needle stays behind, and the pen comes away without a needle left on it.
  4. One look tells you it is done. A used needle has no seal. Open the lid and you can see, and feel, that this week’s jab has happened.

It helps prevent a missed week and a double week. No app, no battery, nothing to charge.

One weekly pen, one NeedleBay, one month

A weekly pen holds four doses. NeedleBay has four bays. Load it when you start a new pen and it lasts exactly as long as the pen does: first dose to last, one needle a week, one case. Four used needles in the bays means the pen is finished.

When the pen is finished, empty the four used needles into your sharps bin, load four new needles, and you are ready for the next pen. NeedleBay does not count what is left inside the pen; your pen’s leaflet covers that.

Did I do this week’s jab?

Jab day comes round once a week, and by Thursday the question is usually what day did I take it. Each jab leaves its used needle locked in its bay, so the case shows what has been done, not what you meant to do. Before you inject, one look at the bays shows whether this week’s needle is already used, which helps prevent a second jab in the same week. It is a simple way to remember a weekly medicine without an app.

NeedleBay does not tell you which day is due or how many days it has been. What to do after a missed dose is in your pen’s leaflet, or ask your pharmacist. If you think you have taken two doses, ring your pharmacist or NHS 111.

One more honest limit: the case shows that a needle was used, not that the dose went in. If you are not sure the injection worked, your pen’s leaflet covers what to do, or ask your pharmacist.

A single NeedleBay and a twin pack side by side with an insulin pen, one case for each pen

Take insulin as well as a weekly pen?

Then you have two routines: insulin every day and the other pen once a week. Keeping track of both in one head is where things slip.

The simple answer is one NeedleBay for each medicine. The daily case shows whether today’s insulin is done. The weekly case shows whether this week’s jab is done. Each pen keeps its own needles, so nothing gets mixed up, and your partner or carer can see both at a glance without asking.

Changing how much insulin you take after starting a weekly pen is a question for your diabetes team, not for us. NeedleBay only helps you see what has been done.

Out and about with a weekly pen

Weekends, work, holidays: this week’s needle and the used one after it travel in one pocket case with lids that click shut, so nothing is left behind and nothing is loose. On a trip, up to four used needles stay locked inside until you are back at your sharps bin.

NeedleBay does not keep your pen cool. For heat and travel, use a cool bag or cooling wallet and follow your pen’s own leaflet. Keep the pen and your prescription in hand luggage, as your pharmacy advises.

Quick answers

Does Mounjaro come with needles?

No. The Mounjaro KwikPen box has no needles in it; your pharmacy or prescriber supplies them, and the pen takes a standard screw-on pen needle, which is what NeedleBay holds.

Which pen needles fit NeedleBay?

Most prescribed screw-on pen needles, including BD Micro-Fine, NovoFine, mylife and GlucoRx. The 4mm 32G needles most people are given fit insulin pens and GLP-1 pens alike, which is why NHS guidance picks one needle for both. Not sure? Email [email protected] and we will check. See needles for the KwikPen.

My pen came with needles in the box. Can I use those?

Yes, if they are screw-on pen needles. Load them into NeedleBay like any others.

My pen came without needles. Where do I get them?

From the pharmacy that supplied your pen, or any pharmacy, or your prescriber. NeedleBay does not supply or sell needles. It holds the ones you are given.

What size needle do I need?

Needle length and thickness are for your prescriber or pharmacist to choose. NeedleBay fits most prescribed screw-on pen needles whatever the size.

Do I need a new needle every time?

Your pen’s leaflet will say so, and NeedleBay makes it the natural habit: one needle per bay, one bay per jab.

Can I put used pen needles in the household bin?

No. They go in a sharps bin. NeedleBay keeps them locked away until they drop into one, so none are loose in the rubbish.

What does the leaflet mean by not recapping, loose or bent needles?

Injection guidance asks you to take the needle off straight after the jab, leave the cover off rather than putting it back on, keep the needle out of a pocket or an ordinary bin, and leave it straight rather than bending it. NeedleBay answers those in one move: the used needle screws back into its own bay, the lid clicks shut, and it stays there until it drops into a sharps bin. It is not a sharps bin and does not replace one.

I do not like seeing the needle. Does that help?

The needle stays in its bay the whole time. You screw the pen onto it, inject, and screw the pen back into the same bay, so you handle the pen rather than the needle. It is a case, not a treatment for a fear of needles, but a lot of people find there is less to look at.

Is NeedleBay a sharps bin?

No. It holds up to four used needles until you reach a sharps bin. Ask your pharmacy, GP surgery or council how to get a sharps bin and how to hand a full one back. Our storage guide explains more.

Is NeedleBay a timer, an alarm or an app?

No. It shows whether the jab has been taken, by the used needle sitting in its bay. There is nothing to set, nothing to pair and nothing to charge. For the day itself, a calendar or a phone alarm still helps.

My pen has the needle built in. Do I need NeedleBay?

No. With a built-in needle the whole pen goes in the sharps bin after one use, so there is no pen needle to hold. If you screw a needle on before each jab, NeedleBay is for you.

Does NeedleBay keep my pen cool?

No. It holds your pen needles, not the pen. How long your pen can stay out of the fridge is in its leaflet.

Does NeedleBay help with weight loss?

No. It is a case for your pen needles and makes no claim about any medicine. It helps you keep needles safe and know when a jab is done. Nothing more.

How much is it?

From £14.95 for a single NeedleBay. The twin pack is two cases, the triple pack three. Delivery is £2.95 anywhere in the UK, with 30-day returns.

What NeedleBay does not do

It does not keep a pen cool. It does not say which day a dose is due or how many days since the last one. It does not count doses left in the pen or units. It does not hold the pen itself. It is not a sharps bin. It does not help with priming, needle choice or the pen’s dose window. It does not supply needles. It makes no claim about weight loss or how any medicine works. And it is not needed for pens with a built-in needle.
